We used Constructivist Grounded Theory as our primary methodology for analysing qualitative data. This allowed for an iterative process of data collection and analysis, which integrated the different disciplines involved in our research project.
We aimed to collect data from:
- Patients n=100
- Hospital doctors n=25
- GPs n=20
- One in a Million Data Archive (300 recorded GP consultations)
- GMC disciplined doctors n=15
- Medical students n=50
The data from our research is available through the UK Data Store. This is a new dataset, comprising of qualitative data from patients, medical students, and qualified doctors on their experiences of shame and other self-conscious emotions in relation to receiving, providing, or training to provide medical care. It includes:
- 204 participants in total (95 patients, 51 doctors, and 58 medical students)
- 777 individual diary entries (134 from patients, 312 from doctors and 331 from medical students)
- 81 interviews (20 with patients, 41 with doctors and 20 with students)
Our team of researchers in Birmingham received NHS Ethics approval in March 2021 and recruited participants to take part in the study through https://samp.uk. They also recruited doctors who had been through disciplinary procedures with the GMC through a Call For Doctors.
