Shame and Trauma

We have been doing research to understand the role that shame plays in post-trauma states, along with the relevance of shame for trauma-informed approaches to practice. We have been working with the Trauma-Informed Plymouth Network to integrate a ‘shame lens’ into their work.

Luna Dolezal and Matthew Gibson have co-authored a paper ‘Beyond a Trauma-Informed Approach and Towards Shame-Sensitive Practice’ published in June 2022 by the Humanities and Social Sciences Communications and featured in a University of Exeter press release.

You can see a recent talk here from Luna Dolezal on “Trauma and Shame: Shame-Sensitive Practice in Trauma-Informed Approaches to Healthcare” which was part of our ‘Respect and Shame in Healthcare and Bioethics’ seminar series.
