Shame, Loneliness, and the Body: Exploring Experiences of Shame and Loneliness in Health and Illness
20th October 2023, University of Bristol
Experiences of shame and loneliness are near universal, yet have diverse causes and are experienced differently from person to person. On Friday 20th October 2023, the Centre for Health, Humanities and Science (CHHS) invites PGR’s and early career researchers to join us at the University of Bristol for an interdisciplinary symposium on a range of themes related to loneliness and shame, which may include:
• Loneliness and shame in physical illness
• Bodily objectification
• Subjective and objective accounts of loneliness
• ‘Risky bodies’ (bodies that become sites of risk, vulnerability, and shame)
• Marginalised bodies (exploring how factors such as gender, age and disability affect how some bodies are perceived and treated by the state and society)
• Shame, loneliness, and the COVID-19 pandemic
• Mental health, shame and loneliness
• Presentations of loneliness and shame in Jiction / poetry
• Historical attitudes towards loneliness
• Loneliness in healthcare
