Call for Artists – Graphic Medicine Project

Call for comic creator collaborators for paid graphic medicine projects in 2021/2022

We are now searching for comic creators, who want to collaborate with doctors and medical humanities researchers to create graphic medicine comics to illustrate experiences/stories in healthcare, with a focus on emotions.

Proposal Deadline: 15 March, 2021

The Shame and Medicine Project and The Shame Conversation are collaborating on a project to produce graphic medicine resources to be used to teach medical learners about the impact of shame and other emotions in healthcare, medical learning and clinical experience. In the first instance, we are hoping to commission a series of short narrative comic works that explore shame in medical learner experience. Commissioned comics will be used as teaching and curriculum resources with the possibility to publish as collected works.

We are seeking applications from interested comic creators/artists to collaborate on the first stage of this project, which will be to produce a 4-6 page full colour comic in Spring 2021. We have funds to cover artist fees.*

This call is open to artists worldwide. For this project, we have some flexibility with costs and funding, but are expecting this initial comic to cost within the range of £2000-£3000.

Application procedure:

To apply, please send us an e-mail with a brief statement explaining why you are interested in this project and outlining previous relevant experience. Please also include your CV and 5 examples of your work and an estimate of costs/artist fee for a 4-6 page colour comic. A relevant digital portfolio can also be linked. Sequential art and cartoons are preferred as work samples, but other samples will also be appreciated. Selection will be based on the following factors:

A shortlist of applicants will be chosen for an additional round of the selection process which may involve creating example work related to the theme (which will be paid) and interviews with the committee.

Email queries and applications to Luna, Charlotte and Will: L.R.Dolezal@exeter.ac.uk, Charlotteawu@outlook.com and william.e.bynum@duke.edu. Please use the email subject line “Graphic Medicine Proposal”.

The deadline for applications is 15 March, 2021.

We look forward to receiving your application!
